Sacramento Police seeking to bridge trust gap with residents find new opportunities in racial profiling report

By Joe • Aug 9th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

sacramento police officersHeads are spinning, nodding, shaking, and probably rolling tonight after local officials released a commissioned report stating blacks (and Hispanics to a lesser degree), are two times more likely to be pulled over than Whites and Asians in SOME AREAS in the city of Sacramento.

I read through the report last night (not recommended). Looks like Lamberth Consulting–who executed the study and penned the report–definitely earned their money. The reports offers a lot of conclusions, but the only ones I am…

Roger Dickinson and friends take a notably sour turn after anti-gang tax concoction fails

By Joe • Aug 6th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

roger dickinsonIf your kid ever asks you, “Mom/Dad, what does it mean when someone says you have ’sour grapes’?” you may want to show them a picture of Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson.

In fact, in light of his statements in a recent radio interview, Dickinson may have enough sour grapes to start his own winery–or is that “whinery”?

Shortly after the Sacramento City Council joined other cities in REJECTING a permutation of Dickinson’s anti-gang tax shenanigan,  he appeared on Ben Adler’s Capital…

Help them help US! Ten Sacramento community organizations that need all hands on deck

By Tracy • Jul 28th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

community outreach sacramentoInstead of entertaining new taxes, entertain this idea: Much of the crime in Sacramento is being committed by juvenile delinquents who are not being nurtured and guided through the maturation process. What’s missing from the lives of most of these young people is simply an adult who will hold them accountable.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Fargo’s new tax, and the purported fifty new police officers it will bring to Sacramento, aren’t going to magically produce those…

California sues Countrywide for country-wide mortgage meltdown, but are banks to blame?

By Joe • Jun 26th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

Real estate market felled by asteriskToday it is being reported that California has jumped on the lawsuit bandwagon, and officially filed suit against the Goliath of mortgage brothels, one Countrywide Bank, for what it calls deceptive practices in lending. The state accuses The Country (ahem) of lowering its lending standards to sell homes to any old Tom, Dick or Mary with a pen and hand to use it.

So let me get this right: With this lawsuit (on behalf of thousands of foreclosed consumers), is California…

Evidently the buck (or bus) don’t stop at Sacramento City Hall on Fargo’s watch

By Joe • Jun 25th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

sacramento utilites tossed under bus by city of sacKCRA reports today that our Sacramento City Council is “irritated” with the Utilities department over the results of a recently completed audit that exposed potential mismanagement there, as well as other improprieties such as $1,000,000 worth of missing water meters.

In fact the council is so angry with the mean ol’ utilities department, says KCRA, that they have evidently decided to :gulp: postpone a planned water rate increase! [Nooooo! Please don't postpone the rate increase!]

The casual reader might take this story at…

Time to take a breather and smell the flowers

By Joe • Jun 25th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

Asiatic lillies are my favoriteEven through the thick smoke the flowers still smell lovely. Asiatic Lillies are my favorite. I bought a gorgeous budding bouquet for my wife at Raley’s over the weekend.

In the midst of one of the worst recessions ever, with no end in sight to the drought, the 800+ fires raging in CA at this moment, sky high gas prices, soaring budget deficits, and unchecked crime plaguing neighborhoods throughout Sacramento, I thought I would take a breather to highlight some positive…

By Joe • Jun 21st, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

Google street view comes to SacramentoWant to take a virtual drive down just about any street in Sacramento without ever leaving home? Now virtual cruising is no longer limited to the geeks playing Sim City. Like it or not, about ten days ago Google rolled out a new version of its controversial “Street View” of Google Maps, and Sacramento was one of six or so new locales now available for virtual Sunday drives.

If you’re not familiar with Street View, it’s an option on Google Maps…

Look out: Criminals are getting bolder and colder

By Joe • Jun 20th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

suspected Indiana baby killer apprehendedHow cold? Cold enough to burst into an Indiana bank in broad daylight, jump over the counter and shoot a five month pregnant bank teller in the stomach before she could even acknowledge his selfish demands. Both of her five month old fetal twins died the day after the shooting.

The ONLY good news to come out of this horrific story is that one Brian Kendrick and his accomplice, Aaron Stewart, were apprehended by police due to a tip provided by a…

By Joe • Jun 20th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

text messaging while driving is the new duiA senator from Palo Alto is introducing legislation that would add text-messaging to the cell phone ban on motorists in California. The bill’s author Senator Joe Simitian states, “Texting while driving is so obviously unsafe that it’s hard to believe anyone would attempt it, yet every-day observation suggests there are an awful lot of folks who do.”

He has a point. Kind of. While I agree texting while driving is dangerous for those who lack good judgment (which appears to be…
