I was the first to condemn Obama’s remarks about the police acting “stupidly” in their arrest of his hot-headed Harvard Professor buddy. I thought his comments were totally unbecoming of the commander in chief, and counted myself amongst millions who asked him to apologize. Surprisingly, and much to his credit, he did even better: he [...]

By M. Johnston • Apr 13th, 2009 |Happy Easter, friends. I hope you all had a nice weekend. Ours was wonderful. We attended Saturday Easter vigil at the Cathedral. The service was long and people were required to stand for long periods of time. At one point a man fainted. Fell backward like a tree and slammed his head onto the hardwood floor. A woman screamed. Then, BANG! He was down. The Sac Fire Dept arrived and took him away with them.

By M. Johnston • Apr 1st, 2009 |About a year ago (to the day even), when Kizzy-to-the-Jizzy hinted he might run for Sack Town mayor, Heather Fargo’s fortune teller Richie Ross made an ominous forecast. Ross boldly declared Kevin Johnson would “make the worst decision of his life” (or something as equally foreboding), if he dared to pierce the Fargonian mayoral veil.

BONG! Sacramento Mayor Johnson shoots another transparency brick
By M. Johnston • Feb 3rd, 2009 |Former-Sac-Bee-columnist-turned-gadfly-extraordinaire R.E. Graswich broke an interesting little story last night on KOVR13’s The Scoop. In the segment, Graswich exposed an internal mayoral “staff report” containing–what some might call–covert city charter amendment proposals. Not surprisingly, the proposals–if passed–would give the mayor more power over city council meetings and excuse him from being present under certain conditions.

Mayor Johnson calls off the strong mayor dawgs, shocks residents with stunning new revelation
By M. Johnston • Jan 28th, 2009 | It’s official: after a month of SAGGING and wilting under the pressure of persistent opposition, Mayor Johnson’s strong mayor balloon has finally popped.
Citing the state’s decision not to hold a special election in June, and the cost-prohibitive price tag of a special city election (estimated to be a whopping $1.25 million), K-to-the-J declared his [...]

When it comes to persuasive speech, WHAT you say matters.. and more thoughts about Mayor Johnson’s strong push
By M. Johnston • Jan 10th, 2009 |“Leadership is INFLUENCE. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. My favorite leadership proverb is “He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following is only taking a walk” –John C. Maxwell.
Strong mayor push or power grab? Transparency or visibility? Accountability or answerability? Priority or imperative? Words mean different things to different people, but when [...]
Commentary: Mayor Johnson’s 35 day State of the City address
By M. Johnston • Jan 7th, 2009 |Sooo.. yeah. Mayor J held a press conference, and the Bee captured a few juicy quotes from him. I have to tell you, every time I read another article about our good mayor I feel more foolish for ever wondering if I would run out of things to write about in this space. I’m also [...]

By M. Johnston • Dec 16th, 2008 |I contacted Sacramento Councilman Kevin McCarty via Facebook and asked for his thoughts about the strong mayor referendum KJ is proposing. He replied with his initial thoughts rather quickly, even though he is out of country right now. I’ve referred to Kevin McCarty as the “Big Ooze” in the past for his slowness in endorsing [...]
