Johnson and Fargo face the music in final debate.. and it’s a dandy thanks to Sacramento residents and moderators

By Joe • Oct 27th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

In my estimation the real victors tonight were the voters, thanks to the superlative work of debate moderators, Edie Lambert and Gulstan Dart–especially Edie. I was already a fan, but I have even more respect for her after this debate. Edie posed explicit questions to Johnson, and then pressed him to elaborate on his answers, which left little room for evasiveness or generalizations. The moderators (and viewers), also made it clear to Johnson–I think much to his surprise, in all…

What’s a bully pulpit? How is the city doing on Fargo’s watch? We went downtown and asked residents

By Joe • Oct 26th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

Update: if you have any issue watching the video, watch it on Youtube.com here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKGHvSQuGU0.

I spent some time downtown today with lifetime Natomas resident, Navy veteran, and Sacramento City Council District 1 hopeful John Dahilig. The purpose of our venture was to find out what kind of impact the claims and words of Heather Fargo and Kevin Johnson are having on every day Sacramento residents.

This is part 1 in a series of segments John and I will be shooting together…

Was KJ’s big slip sarcasm or Fargo endorsement? Also, Sac insider unearths old Fargo gem for the ages

40 acres and a plan? Just wonderingWinding down a long, long week of all work and no play–which I hope is not making Joe a dull boy..

Fargo claims Johnson’s plan for Sacramento is a fake
Camp KJ began mailing his “40 point plan for Sacramento” out to voters today.  When sitting mayor Heather Fargo was asked about it, she dismissed the plan as a “copy” of her ideas already in play. When reporters asked Johnson what he thought of the mayor’s comments, he said, “I like the…

No free lunch? The comedy hour at Sacramento city hall is still free of charge every Tuesday night

By Joe • Oct 22nd, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

sacramento city councilUpdated 10/23/08 @ 10:40am.

When Eric Hogue asked me on his Capitol Hour radio show  last week if I thought the council could be salvaged, I was optimistic. I opined the council might have a chance with a quality leader.   Oops. I stand corrected. It’s going to be a long two years with this comedy troupe in charge.  But one thing’s for sure, not everyone will be laughing..

If you didn’t make it out to last night’s council meeting, you…

Divisive and discordant: Mayor Heather Fargo a study in poor leadership practices

By Joe • Oct 18th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share
heather fargo budget crisis“Mayor Heather Fargo called the [police] cuts [announced by Chief Rick Braziel] ‘outrageous’ and ‘unacceptable’ .. She said there were other things the department should consider cutting, like white collar crime investigations and ‘officers out on New Year’s chatting with each other’..”

There she goes, there she goes again.. ripping her colleagues and employees for the budgetary chickens that finally came home to roost last night when Police Chief Rick Braziel announced even more cuts to the city’s already slashed and looted…

Joe Sac radio appearance on the Capital Hour with Eric Hogue, today at 12:10pm on 1380 AM

By Joe • Oct 17th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

eric hogueEric Hogue has graciously invited me to appear on his Capital Hour radio program at 12:10pm today. 1380 on your AM dial. While the radio station is conservative, I find Eric’s rugged, grass roots views refreshing, and think his voice is a very important part of the dialog that should be occurring between Republicans and Democrats for the common good in Sacramento.

Just yesterday the Bee quoted Eric as stating he felt Craig Macglashan should step down for the repugnant Obama images…

Forget the audit, the problem with Sacramento is the City Council

By Joe • Oct 15th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

kevin johnson for mayorI received my absentee ballot today. These days I get pretty excited when I see that envelope in the mail. Admittedly, earlier in my adult life I wasn’t too interested in politics. I was too busy doing other things. I guess I never had a reason to care. After all, it was easy to buy a house back then, and groceries and gas were inexpensive. Life was relatively simple in the relatively small Sac Town.

That’s not the case any longer.…

More thoughts on leadership, the election, and the hurtful consequences of self serving governance

By Joe • Oct 13th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

I supported Obama early on. I thought he was the right guy for the job. I articulated this in at least two articles on this site in April and May. Then again, my support for him presupposed he would select a strong running mate like Hilary Clinton.

Then the Biden choice was announced. I was bowled over. Joe friggin’ Biden? This forced me to step back and re-evaluate my loyalties.  I wondered out loud if Michelle Obama–perhaps injured by some of…

Dear Brenda

By Joe • Oct 10th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

A fellow community member sent a great email to members of a  neighborhood association list I subscribe to. In it she opined that more residents must get involved in their communities in order for change to occur. I responded to her with my theory as to why more people don’t get involved. Of course my theory  is only based on my own experience. I recognize your mileage may vary..

Dear Brenda,

In my opinion it all starts at the top. We [Sacramentans]…
