No free lunch? The comedy hour at Sacramento city hall is still free of charge every Tuesday night

By Joe • Oct 22nd, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

sacramento city councilUpdated 10/23/08 @ 10:40am.

When Eric Hogue asked me on his Capitol Hour radio show  last week if I thought the council could be salvaged, I was optimistic. I opined the council might have a chance with a quality leader.   Oops. I stand corrected. It’s going to be a long two years with this comedy troupe in charge.  But one thing’s for sure, not everyone will be laughing..

If you didn’t make it out to last night’s council meeting, you…

Divisive and discordant: Mayor Heather Fargo a study in poor leadership practices

By Joe • Oct 18th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share
heather fargo budget crisis“Mayor Heather Fargo called the [police] cuts [announced by Chief Rick Braziel] ‘outrageous’ and ‘unacceptable’ .. She said there were other things the department should consider cutting, like white collar crime investigations and ‘officers out on New Year’s chatting with each other’..”

There she goes, there she goes again.. ripping her colleagues and employees for the budgetary chickens that finally came home to roost last night when Police Chief Rick Braziel announced even more cuts to the city’s already slashed and looted…

Joe Sac radio appearance on the Capital Hour with Eric Hogue, today at 12:10pm on 1380 AM

By Joe • Oct 17th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

eric hogueEric Hogue has graciously invited me to appear on his Capital Hour radio program at 12:10pm today. 1380 on your AM dial. While the radio station is conservative, I find Eric’s rugged, grass roots views refreshing, and think his voice is a very important part of the dialog that should be occurring between Republicans and Democrats for the common good in Sacramento.

Just yesterday the Bee quoted Eric as stating he felt Craig Macglashan should step down for the repugnant Obama images…

Forget the audit, the problem with Sacramento is the City Council

By Joe • Oct 15th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

kevin johnson for mayorI received my absentee ballot today. These days I get pretty excited when I see that envelope in the mail. Admittedly, earlier in my adult life I wasn’t too interested in politics. I was too busy doing other things. I guess I never had a reason to care. After all, it was easy to buy a house back then, and groceries and gas were inexpensive. Life was relatively simple in the relatively small Sac Town.

That’s not the case any longer.…

Dear Brenda

By Joe • Oct 10th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

A fellow community member sent a great email to members of a  neighborhood association list I subscribe to. In it she opined that more residents must get involved in their communities in order for change to occur. I responded to her with my theory as to why more people don’t get involved. Of course my theory  is only based on my own experience. I recognize your mileage may vary..

Dear Brenda,

In my opinion it all starts at the top. We [Sacramentans]…

Chicken soup letter from Tretheway tells Natomas community to focus, while rumors of funding impropriety swirl

By Joe • Oct 8th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

ray tretheway fireShortly after I published Angelique Ashby’s smoldering letter to the Natomas community about the West Natomas fire,  District One Councilman Ray Tretheway sent his own email to the community, replete with canned sentimentality only Razor Sharp Ray could cook up on a moment’s notice.

I received Sunshine Ray’s letter via email this afternoon. In classic Tretheway style, he opens by sharing a riveting anecdote about having lost his own home to fire (who knew?), then goes on to state his commitment to…

Natomas community leader raises questions for Tretheway and city after West Natomas blaze severely injures firefighters

By Joe • Oct 7th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

“The question to ask is how many more tragedies before we get the fire station we need on the West side of I-5? Whose home will be next or will it be a school? Which brave firefighter will have to try to beat the odds because we don’t have enough help? And what price will that firefighter and his family pay?” - Angelique Ashby

Fargo’s snarky grin, interruptions, and mumbling don’t faze Johnson in second televised mayoral debate

By Joe • Oct 6th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

Updated 8:30am - 7Oct08

Fargo was absolutely pathetic on every level last night. In 22 years as a business professional and voter, I have never witnessed such an egregious, vindictive public official so replete with resentment. One absolutely can not be an effective leader (let along consensus builder!) with that kind of emotion ruling one’s entire being. No way. Last night Fargo showed through her snarky grin, condescending sighs and defensive body language why there is so much division in this…

Schwarzenegger clears way for Sac Town “Docks” project, but Poopnear Reservoir a stinking point

By Joe • Oct 5th, 2008 | Bookmark and Share

the docks sacramentoI went to a “town hall” meeting featuring mayoral hopeful KJ in Natomas a few weeks ago. I recall Johnson saying he didn’t think Sacramento had done a good job developing along its rivers. How Portland and other cities have done a far better job. Take San Antonio for example, said Kevin, to the delight of the small group of people in attendance, “..they’ve actually developed around a canal that isn’t even a real river!” cried Kevin,

To hear Kevin tell it,…
