OR does it depict the apple tree that Newton himself said inspired him to formulate his theory of gravitation…”by watching the fall of an apple from a tree…”? If the latter, why only one apple, and a glowing one at that?

Are they kidding? This is extremely far reaching. You ask why only one apple and a glowing one at that. My first thought would be - because Newton saw AN apple fall from the tree and glowing because their name and logo are APPLE not apples. They wanted it to stand out.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

My brother is a professional geek who rarely leaves his basement and works from home in a different state. His drink of choice is Redbull and everclear. He's very very tall so he can take a lot of it!

Maybe he named the company Apple in some sort of yet to be known mystical support of his sister's husband?

:D You always have me thinking.

Drunk? Hmmm. What kind of drunk are you referring to? If alcohol, I tend to think not. I have met and worked alongside hundreds of programmers/developers/engineers in my career (on and off the clock), and I can't think of a single successful one who was the type to get drunk... at least on alcohol.

Don't get me wrong. I have met many "geeks" who drank incessantly.... but their liquid of choice always seems to be Red Bull, Jolt, Dew, and/or Coffee. And MAN can those folks drink! :D I knew one database guy who made a TOWER of Coke cans in his cube. Within a month it had nearly reached the ceiling!

Joking aside, Steve Jobs admits to taking copious amounts of LSD on his spiritual journey to India to seek enlightenment after college. He came back from India with a shaved head and announced he was a Buddhist. Interesting to note Jobs step parents, Paul and Clara, gave him the full name Steven Paul. Steven was one of Christianity's first martyrs; St. Paul of course, is one of the religion's most celebrated leaders. I would think it's at least POSSIBLE that Jobs rebelled in college and thereafter, especially if he had a strong Christian upbringing, especially considering..

Jobs biological parents' names are Joanne Carole Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali, a Syrian gentleman of Arab-American descent with a doctorate in Political Science. So technically Jobs is half Arab-American, although that was not known until his biological sister, Mona Simpson, (the author born Mona Jindal .. "Because Steve Jobs was placed for adoption as a baby by their then-unmarried parents, she first met her sibling as an adult. She later took her stepfather's surname, Simpson").

Mona's first novel was "Anywhere but Here," the story of a turbulent mother-daughter relationship. Her next book was called "The Lost Father."

Get this from Wikipedia: Mona Simpson is also a contributor to various anthologies and essay collections. She is the Sadie Samuelson Levy Professor in Languages and Literature at Bard College. She currently lives in Santa Monica, California with her husband Richard Appel and their two children. Appel, a writer for The Simpsons, used his wife's name for Homer Simpson's mother, beginning with the episode "Mother Simpson."

Wow! And she married a dude with the last name Appel? WOW. So her name now is technically Mona Appel?

Anyway, I said the prism logo thing is "weird" because the Bible teaches the "separation of light" is precisely the goal of evil. It's a euphemism for "Divide and Conquer."

I like to keep you thinking Joe!

Here's what I think... bunch of drunk dudes sitting around geeking out.... they see an apple on the table "Hey wouldn't it be cool if we called it Apple! Totally simple and funny but everyone will wonder for years why we called it that!"

Or... in true geek fashion, it's some D&D symbol ;-)
