Hey everyone, where are all those jobs?

John Maxwell on the difference between a boss and a leader

By MJ Jan 12th, 2009 | 4 Reader comments

This week will be dedicated to leadership guidance from John C Maxwell. Don’t know him? Google.

The boss drives people; the leader coaches them.

The boss depends on authority; the leader depends of goodwill.

The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm.

The boss says “I,”; the leader says “we.”

The boss looks for blame for a breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown.

The boss knows how it is done; the leader SHOWS how it is done

The boss says “Go!”; the leader says “Let’s go.”

[Joe: Also, I think it's important to add: the widely-agreed upon hallmark of leadership is humility. One can simply not be a leader if one is not humble. Pride has no place in leadership circles. The only pride that is acceptable is pride over team accomplishment and so forth].

Other bites:

(Think gaining a small following and leaving everyone else out in the cold) “The issue is not whether you can influence, but what kind of influencer you are going to be”

(Think winning the election , and now pining for the strong mayor title) “Therein lies the problem; most people define leadership as the ability to ACHIEVE A POSITION, not get followers”

(Think relationship with city council). “The three components of leadership are communication, recognition, and influence. You start by communicating effectively. This leads to recognition. Recognition leads to influence.”

  4. being a bossman myself….err…a leader….of…my employees…. heh… it’s sometimes hard to lead, but i’ve found over the years that it ends up being even harder to boss.

and a side-note that i was taught many years ago by i-have-no-idea-who; if ever you become entirely dependant on an employee: fire them immediately. it’s so true too.
