POOF! A decade of crime fighting progress completely vanishes during Fargo’s eight years as mayor

Violent felons, repeat felons, and criminals everywhere: Are you looking for work? Come on down to Sac Town! The door’s wide open!

mayor fargo trust sacramento crime rates

Economy got you down? Do you have a hardcore drug habit you need to support!?? Are you a dyed-in-the-wool career criminal who is dying to assault and rob innocent, hardworking taxpayers??  Well doggone it grab your bats, and guns, and knives, and lock picks, and slim jims, and COME TO SACRAMENTO, y’all!! Hey and don’t forget to BYOA (bring your own ammo) to Sac Town cuz we done got us an ammo ordinance!

We’ve got plenty of work here for you and the smallest police force in the country for a city our size! The opportunities our endless !! Your kind is welcomed here! Oh and if you are 18 or over, PLEASE VOTE FOR HEATHER FARGO! She will work hard for you to keep the jobs flowing!! See you on K Street!

Yes, that was sarcasm intended to demonstrate how dire the crime problem is in our city, because apparently people are not getting it. This crime problem is REAL. Our city ’s violent crime rate is the worst per 100k residents in the region. We aren’t leaders. We aren’t setting an example. We are getting laughed at. No wonder no one wants to do business here! And for the record while KJ’s St’ Hope mismanagement MAY have fallen short of excellence, it never put my family, myself and my neighbors directly into the path of danger like Fargo and company’s mismanagement of our city.

Yes, vote for Fargo if you are a crime lover. Who needs CSI Miami when we can have it played out in real life in our neighborhoods! The city of Sacramento is wonderland for criminals, and they can thank Heather Fargo and company for all the great opportunities. The only jobs Heather Fargo and our leaders have created are ones for criminals!!

Sacramento, how can you re-elect someone who has made your safety LAST?

Is this a person we can trust? Is this how we define progress?

This is disgraceful. We deserve so much better. We need to take back our city and hold our elected officials accountable ! We have to redefine our city’s priorities and focus on basic services before we can solve global warming and build high rises. We need to build a cooperative between Republicans and Democrats and not let liberal initiatives DOMINATE the agenda at city hall. We need to elect leaders who are steeped in finance and business disciplines, not environmental activism and lip service. We need a local government that values safety as much as we do!

This is disgraceful. I am ashamed.

And Rick Braziel and the police are not the problem!! Stop blaming them, and stop dissing Rick in the press, Fargo. Be a bridge BUILDER not a bridge DEMOLITIONIST.  You are DEMORALIZING your team members ! What is wrong with you?! And stop bagging on our police for overtime. Overtime is an EFFECT, not a CAUSE.

Sacramento, we need to keep our officials focused on causes. And when they bash each other in the press we need to call them on it and tell them  to stop acting like children. No more division! Time to build each other up and stop tearing each other down!!

Crime is NOT down in Sacramento. When Fargo took office it was at an all time LOW. It is still at an unprecedented high. It could drop for three more years and STILL not be as low as it was when Fargo was sworn in. We have reversed an entire DECADE of crime reduction on Fargo’s watch. I guess that’s what she means by progress.

  1. Awesome graphic Joe! The plane is a nice touch too. Although the martini/memo animation is my favorite so far. You might want to also tag your article with tweakers. In the past 5 years, I have seen an increase in tweakers riding around my neighborhood on bicycles. They appear to be casing the area. Occasionally I’ll see them carrying a dvd player or other goods that appear to be stolen.

  2. Get lost Fargo! No one told her there was a problem? This shows undeniably how Fargo has ignored crime. It is crazy Kevin Johnson campaign did not have this graphic to show in the debates.
Mother of God. How the hell is she going to wiggle out of this one?! This is literally the smoking gun.

  3. This chart has been incredibly insightful and I wish I had it a long time ago. Crime soared on Fargo’s watch, no denying it. She either allowed it, enabled it, or both. It goes to show how out of touch she is with what is happening in Sacramento’s streets. Maybe she is awake now? Do you think she could turn this around?

I must say former city manager Bob Thomas deserves PLENTY of blame here, too. He was city manager between 2000 and 2006 when crime was SOARING.

And I must correct myself: Crime actually started going DOWN when Ray Kerridge took over. I did not know that. I don’t know how it will continue to decrease with the cuts, but maybe there will be –as braziel says–a “miracle”

Ray Kerridge you deserve credit for helping to reduce crime slightly in 2007. I stand corrected. I also apologize for blaming you for the unacceptable crime rate in Sacramento.

The mayor and your predecessor are the ones who shoulder the blame for growing the population but not growing the services to keep up with it. You walked into a quagmire.

    Joe

  4. I will come to the council meeting tomorrow. I am going to let Fargo have it too.

  5. Ray Kerridge is a slacker. I wouldn’t cut him any breaks. He is a terible city manager and he should be fired.

  7. Hola Lupe. Donde vives?

  8. Letter sent to Mayor Fargo this evening:

    Mrs. Mayor,

    Happy Monday! :)

    Couple quick questions for you.

    1. Why do we have one of the smallest police forces in the country for a city our size? How did this happen?

    2. Crime has risen from approx. 750 violent crimes per 100,000 people to approximately 1,250 crimes per 100,000 people since you were sworn in. Mayor Serna had made such remarkable progress on crime, yet all his progress appears to essentially have been erased on your watch. Would you agree that lives could have been saved and many robberies, rapes, burglaries, and so forth could have been averted had the city under your leadership made public safety its number one priority?

    3. You have stated repeatedly in debates that “crime is down” on your watch, but a closer look at the numbers indicates whilst that statement may technically be true, it is quite deceptive because in reality crime is still approximately 400 violent crimes per 100,000 people HIGHER than it was when you took the mayoral reins. If public safety has always been your number one priority , how do you explain these numbers?

Thank you in advance for your response.

    Very best regards,

    Joe

  11. A smoking gun. Ha. I’ll say.

  13. Juan are you a Latino, or are you playing games? Juan’s formal espanol translates to: I want to thank Mayor Fargo for the all the crime opportunities I’ve been given. While the gringos are at the council meeting at six, I am going to be stealing their cars.

  14. Hey NCG, thanks. The Martini Memo! ;)

  16. Tomorrow’s council meeting will be a test for our community. If citizens are willing to go down to city council and voice their displeasure with our city leaders en masse… they may begin to get a clue….

ok that was my first thought..

Here is my second thought… even if five hundred citizens were to march on city hall..our dismissive elected officials will declare that our presence was merely a political stunt… like Fargo did last week when John Dahilig questioned Ray about the Tree Foundation.

They just don’t want to hear from citizens period.

Well if there was only one thing that I could make them to hear loud and clear…and one thing only…it would be the sound of the door closing behind them after they have cleared out their desks in city hall…

  18. Sac Insider, residents need to get tougher on them. They are way too kind right now. Political action typically only comes after 1) Legal action or 2) Mass outrage.

Americans generally don’t get too involved these days unless the topic is abortion, immigration, or gay rights.

Apparently folks are ok with crime. The “that kind of thing happens to other people” attitude and apathy in our society is tragic. People have somehow come to accept that crime is just part of life now… until of course something happens to them… then they are on the news crying… wondering how it happened to them.

But that’s ok. I won’t give up the good fight and I hope you don’t either.

  19. Joe, I don’t think the Mayor is going to respond to your letter. You don’t sound like a card-carrying member of the Sacramento Democratic Party Machine. If there’s anything I’ve learned from living in Sacramento, it’s that only real Democrats are allowed to participate in government or hold elected officials accountable

  20. Hi NCG. It sure seems that way sometimes. But I’ll just keep chipping away. I never thought I’d hear from Ray Tretheway and he sent me a long email the other day about South Natomas Community Park funding. Miracles DO happen. :)

  21. Pass the popcorn Joe. This coming election night is going to be a blockbuster!

  23. No one gives a shit about this city. They will come out tonight and say a bunch of whiny shit that won’t mean jack to the council. When the meeting is over the council will laugh at them. This city needs some leaders with some balls to stand up and tell them we have had it. I would, but I have a softball game.

See how selfish I am? Sheesh!

  24. Sven..i just got back from the council meeting…. you hit the nail on the head in your prediction.

  25. Mayor asked the public where to cut the fat from the budget. The public knows exactly where to start, they have been asking her to cut the fat for a long time. How about starting with the Mayor’s fat friends who sit on their fat asses and do absolutely nothing ALL.DAY.LONG? Cut the fat of the mayor’s fat friends from throughout the city and save $1 million a year. $50,000 a year to do nothing all day? Sold. $60,000 a year to do nothing all day? Sold. $70,000 a year to do nothing all day? Sold. $80,000 a year to do nothing all day? Sold. $90,000 er-you get the picture.

  26. I watched the city council meeting last night and I was not surprised at how rude the council is. First rob fong new the answers to the questions he asked he just wanted everyone in the audience to hear. Second, Angelique, you did great Hammond is rude and condesending. Third, Sandy SHeedy, way to go I have been waiting for someone up there to get angry., Everyone up there should be angry the things that are happening in this city government keep me up at night and I want to screem so I applaud you for doing it. (oh and sticking it to Pannell) . Fourth I beleive it was James butler who said last night he would liek to sit and look at the budget. (the real budget ) not just the one they show. They have a lot of money not accounted for. Fifth I don’t think I need to tell anyone here but GET OUT AND VOTE. tell your neighbors to do the same.

  27. Dear Neighbor,

I hope that you can join me and staff from the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency as we have a dialogue about affordable housing. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the City of Sacramento’s current affordable housing policies and share your ideas and concerns as the City of Sacramento is in the process of updating our inclusionary housing policy.

  28. Hey Joe,

Looking for material for your next blog post? Check out Johnson and Fargo’s statements in the Sacramento County Voter Information Pamphlet. The contrast between the two is amazing. Johnson’s statement outlines a clear vision and lists several specific accomplishments. Fargo makes some vague claims that cannot be backed up with facts because they are not true (e.g. that the city is “safer, more vibrant and fun because of my efforts”). Then, she wastes about a quarter of her space on social issues such as abortion and gay marriage that are completely irrelevant in a mayoral race. Those matters should be left to state and federal officials who write the laws and appoint judges. The lady is a joke. I just moved to town and I cannot for the life of me believe how she managed to get elected not only once, but twice. What were all you Sacramentans thinking?

Also, how about a post on Measure O? I’d be interested in getting your thoughts on that one.

  29. DMC, thanks for reading.

” What were all you Sacramentans thinking?”

GREAT question. When she got elected crime was at an all time low. When she came up for re-election we were in the middle of a real estate boom. It is only now that we are seeing how poor of a leader she is…. when the chips are down… it’s always the measure of a leader, how they manage a crisis. And she has failed that test miserably time and again. Her surrogates are crazy to speak on her behalf. I’d be embarrassed. The bar for quality public service is SO LOW right now it is insane. Join the good fight. Start coming out to meetings. I know I am. Let’s give them hell, just as they have given it to us..

  30. Joe, count me in.
