In light of the anti technology ideas spilling out of city hall, you would never know incumbent mayor Heather Fargo is the same progressive visionary her campaign spin doctors have presented her as in recent months.
If there were any questions about the Fargo-led Sacramento City Council’s aversion to technology and progress, their latest shenanigan attempting to pick more tax dollars out of the pockets of inflation-embattled Sacramentans for text messaging (of all things), should remove all doubt.
Did you know the council is already plundering $20 MILLION per year from residents in the form of a “utility tax” that targets electricity, gas, cable tv and cell phone usage? [One can only guess how they ever got away with reclassifying luxuries as utilities].
In typical Fargo-esque style, the spin doctors are working hard to convince the public that this is a good for the city. Specifically, they are attempting to sneak it past us by cleverly coupling it with a promise to reduce the 7.5% utility tax to 7% if the measure passes. Smoke and mirrors as usual in the Fargo-led city hall.
Oh and the council’s justification for this taxation? “There’s lots of different ways for people to use phone technology to make that call and we want to extend the tax to all of those technologies,” said City of Sacramento Treasurer Russ Fehr. Too bad he didn’t finish his thought process and tell the rest of the story–which would have likely been “..because we dug ourselves into a massive $58 MILLION UFO-sized budget CRATER, and due to the lack of creativity and conscientiousness in the minds of our lethargic council members, we have no other choice but to penalize technology users. And by the way, stand down because we’re coming after your friggin’ IPODS next kids!!”
Under Fargo’s “leadership,” this folksy clan of global-warming obsessed bureaucrats (yes, the oxymoron hurts my head, too), have consistently proven their lack of vision and complete lack of awareness as to what is important to residents. It wasn’t enough that they couldn’t get a WiFi network deal done downtown when their coffers were overflowing during the real estate boom. Now, instead of penalizing things that are ERODING our quality life like drunk drivers, reckless drivers, street racers, ammunition, weapons, etc etc etc, they want to penalize communication advances that are ENHANCING our lives.
PLEASE vote NO on this ridiculous progress-thwarting text message tax in November.
